Bernard de Wet – LCPC

Bernard De Wet

Hello there! My name is Bernard de Wet, thank you so much for reading my bio – it’s a pleasure to virtually meet you! Some fun facts about me, I am a born and raised South African, and I absolutely love anything geek culture related and traveling! I moved to the United States in August 2010 to pursue my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Biology at Cornell College and moved to Chicago in August 2015 to pursue my Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology, with a concentration in Marriage & Family Therapy and Children & Adolescents at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I currently work as a therapist at CFC Therapy Group and as an assistant director for a non-profit community mental health center.

It is my goal to serve as your guide and walk with you on your life journey. I aim to help you overcome those obstacles that may be holding you back from reaching your dreams, while providing you with healthy strategies to implement in your life outside of therapy. Whether exploring the past, present, or future; discussing coping strategies; processing stressful events; building resilience and optimism; healing from trauma; creative problem-solving; or enhancing communication with your relationships. I serve an array of culturally diverse clients, including children, adolescents, teenagers, college students, adults, couples, and families.

I use an integrated approach to therapy through a variety of modalities, including person-centered, cognitive behavioral, existential, narrative, and solution-focused therapy. I have also trained under Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman and follow their Gottman Method Couples Therapy approach. I am also a certified: Clinical Trauma Professional, Grief Counseling Specialist, Mood Disorder Professional, and Youth Mental Health Specialist.

In therapy, we focus on identifying stressors, exploring coping strategies, set positive and effective goals, overcome challenges, and create healthy patterns. I encourage clients to express themselves within the warm, comforting therapeutic space, while making progress towards achieving solutions. My philosophy, as mentioned, is to guide and walk alongside you in your life journey, as you create your new self and begin writing your new chapter.
